Pregnant? Looking for Hypnobirthing courses or Antenatal Classes and living in York or near York?

I can assist you with that! I am an award winning Hypnobirthing teacher, winning Hypnobirthing Specialist of the Year - Prestige Award 2026. I live between Leeds and York, in a village called Sherburn in Elmet, which is in North Yorkshire, but in the Leeds district. I love living in Sherburn in Elmet. It has such a friendly and welcoming community, some fabulous local businesses and great dog walking routes with it being in the countryside.

I am a Mum of 2 children, 1 cat and 1 dog. I love drinking tea, (Yorkshire Tea of course!) and I am a huge lover of cake. One of my favourite places to go when I visit York, is The Old York Tea Room. Did you know that it is the oldest house in York and built in 1316? When we visit York, my little boy often enjoys a visit to the Jorvik Viking Centre or York National Railway Museum and my daughter and I always love a wander down the York Shambles

Advantages of Hypnobirthing

Preparing for your birth is so important and learning hypnobirthing techniques can help you to reduce the fear and increase the chances of having a positive birth experience. It is never too late or too early to prepare for birth. I recommend starting a Hypnobirthing course from around 20-35 weeks gestation, to get the maximum benefits of the full course. However, if you are expecting your baby very soon, you can still do a course with me and do the essentials course. This is a shorter version of the full course, but will still give you all the techniques that you'll you need to have a great birthing experience. Alternatively you might want to do my calm caesarean course, if you are planning to have a planned caesarean section.

One of the many advantages of Hypnobirthing courses are that it is suitable for everyone, including birth partners and suitable for all births. So, whether you have a drug free vaginal birth, instrumental birth, home birth, water birth, hospital birth, epidural or caesarean section, hypnobirthing will help you to have a positive experience, however that might look.  My courses can help you to remove any fears that you might have about birth, using various tools and techniques, to help you to feel excited and positive about your birth. Hypnobirthing has so many advantages. Hypnobirthing can also help you during your pregnancy, helping you to relax, which will have positive effects on your baby and help you to bond with your baby during pregnancy.

"We really enjoyed the first Hypnobirthing session the other night and felt so utterly relaxed and calm after it, sleeping really well and I generally feel more positive. I’m surprised how much the positive birth story helped (I was a little bit nervous when it began!)" - Emma &  Scott

Why do a Private Hypnobirthing Course in Yorkshire, when you can do a free NHS Antenatal Class?

You might be wondering why pay for antenatal birth preparation, when you can attend a free NHS antenatal class in Yorkshire? Well, this is true. However, a free antenatal class provided by the NHS is very different to a private antenatal class and it is also very different to a hypnobirthing course.

  • A NHS antenatal class will likely have lots more people attending the class, unlike a private class which will either be just yourself and birth partner or just a small group of other pregnant couples. Private classes allow the teacher to adapt the content for individual circumstances e.g. previous trauma, anxiety, planned caesarean sections.

  • NHS antenatal classes will be tailored to suit the NHS Trust that is running the antenatal class and it will not give you true, honest information that will support you in making your own informed decisions. My private hypnobirthing courses and my private antenatal classes give non bias, honest, evidence based information.

  • At the end of a NHS course, you will not have ongoing support from the antenatal class instructor. My antenatal classes and hypnobirthing courses offer continuity of care and include ongoing support after the course has finished and right through the rest of pregnancy.

  • The time of an NHS class is likely to be at fixed times. My private classes are flexible and work at a time that suits you and take place in your own home.

  • A free NHS class will be very generic, covering the basics of a hospital birth. For example, pain relief options, hospital procedures and stages of labour. A private class will discuss all possible options with you, including birth rights, where you can give birth, how you can give birth and alternative natural pain relief options.

  • Most NHS antenatal classes are limited on time and usually only consist of one session. Unlike private classes, which run over multiple days/weeks/hours. This gives you more time to practice different techniques and ask questions.

  • Antenatal Hypnobirthing courses are much more in depth than antenatal classes. Hypnobirthing courses cover topics about creating a positive mindset for birth, reducing fear, relaxation techniques, how to involve the birth partner, how to make birth plans and postnatal preparation. Hypnobirthing courses are not available on the NHS, so to do a hypnobirthing course, you would need to do this with a private business.

As you can see, there are various differences between a free NHS antenatal class and a private antenatal class or private hypnobirthing course. Some people decide to do both, so that they give themselves all possible options.

If you want to fully prepare for your birth, prepare the mind, the body and your birth partner, then a private antenatal class or private hypnobirthing course will give you just that. You can still visit the different maternity facilities in Yorkshire and do a free NHS antenatal class, but don't miss out on additional support and information that is available to you privately, that will help you to increase your chances of having a positive birth experience.

Maternity Unit Tours: Choosing Where To Give Birth

If you plan to give birth at York Maternity Hospital, York don't have a midwife led unit. However, they do have 2 rooms with birth pools on the labour ward and 10 delivery suites, some with ensuites. It's important that you explore a few local maternity units or hospital trusts if you plan to give birth in hospital, because they are all different. They all have different hospital policies too. For example, at York Maternity Hospital Trust, once you are on the postnatal ward, your partner can only be with you between the hours of 8am and 8pm. However, at Leeds and Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust, your birth partner can stay with you on the postnatal ward for the full duration of your stay. At Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust, you can arrange to have a tour of the different maternity facilities available too and if you'd like a midwife led unit, you can have a tour of the Bronte Centre in Dewsbury or the birth centre at Pinderfields. If you'd prefer to be on the labour ward when you give birth, you can arrange a visit of Pinderfields maternity unit. Speak to your midwife or give the different birth places a call to find out more. It is your choice where you give birth and you don't have to choose your local maternity hospital.

Why Do A Private Hypnobirthing Course with BABA Doula Services & Hypnobirthing?

My private online or face to face award winning Hypnobirthing courses will not only prepare you and your partner for birth, but they will give you personalised support throughout the duration of your pregnancy and increase your chances of having a positive birth experience. My experience and knowledge can help you to make informed decisions that are right for you. Most antenatal educators have only ever attended their own births. I have attended and supported many births, many that include different scenarios too. I know and understand the maternity system in the UK and the local area and I can educate you and your partner on how to navigate it and help you to feel empowered and in control.

My face to face courses take place in the comfort of your own home too, so you can feel relaxed and be as flexible as you want. I can be in York city centre within 30 minutes and reach lots of surrounding towns and villages of York. I can be in East Leeds within 15 minutes and I can be in West Leeds within 40 minutes. My local maternity units are York Teaching Hospital, Leeds Teaching Hospital and Pinderfields Hospital and I can be at any of these maternity hospitals within 30-40 minutes, (depending on traffic). I am very familiar with Pinderfields Hospital and Leeds Teaching Hospitals, having supported many of my doula clients at these maternity departments.

What Parents Say About My Hypnobirthing & Antenatal Classes

Having supported lots of new and expectant parents in the Leeds, Wakefield, York and surrounding area, here is what some of them have to say....

"Doing a Hypnobirthing course has made me feel empowered to know that birthing my baby how I want, is my decision and I know what is best for me and my baby. After having the experience of doing a Hypnobirthing course with Julia, I now feel ready and calm to give birth at home, something that I'd never considered. I know I can do this and I can't thank Julia enough." - Kirsty

"I feel so much more prepared now. After having our antenatal sessions with Julia, I feel much calmer and informed about the birth. I feel that I understand how I'll be able to support my wife when she is in labour and I'm actually feeling really excited about it all." - James

"Julia was very easy to be around and to open up to. She is a pleasure to have around - like a friend rather than a stranger in my home." - Bianca

"Julia was understanding and gave some views and support without trying to steer us in any specific direction. Generally has a calm and sympathetic disposition." - Ben
